Whastapp will no longer support phones with some operating systems in 2019. The Facebook owned company is a popular messaging platform that has over a billion active users. The app has seen extensive usage in many countries including Nigeria.
“We’ll no longer actively develop for these operating systems; some features might stop functioning at any time. If you currently use an older operating system, we recommend upgrading to a newer version…,” WhatsApp said on its support page.
The news has been greeted with surprise as a lot of people still use old phones. It also comes at a time when people will be looking to send holiday messages to their loved ones.
The tech company has been adding a lot of features for a while now. The new features including group calls and others have been greeted really well by users.
The operating system that will lose the support after December 31, 2018:
- Nokia S40. S40 was last used in Nokia 515 in 2013.
WhatsApp will also stop working on the following phones from February 1, 2020
- Phones running Android 2.3.7 and older
- iPhones running iOS 6 (iPhone 3GS/)
- Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread and older
